The American Kennel Club (AKC) recognizes about 150 dog breeds of dogs. According to their registry, in 2008, the ten most popular breeds in the United States are, in order: Labrador retriever, Yorkshire terrier, German shepherd dog, golden retriever, beagle, boxer, dachshund, bulldog, poodle, and shih tzu.
